5 simple ways to improve your CV
The CV may be the oldest weapon in the job seeker’s arsenal but that doesn’t mean it should be a dud. Your curricular vitae needs to be bang up to date and on point to impress your next employer.
Here are some simple ways to improve your CV so it stands out from the stack on the recruitment desk:
Get the basics right
There’s some key information that recruiters expect to see in every CV. Make their day by always including your:
- Contact details
- Your work history
- Relevant skills and experience
- Two referees
Everyone wants to present their very best side when they are applying for jobs, but that doesn’t mean embellishing the truth.
Be honest about your skills and experience. Take a while to review everything you do and have done in your current and previous roles. Break down the tasks and responsibilities, and pair them with the requirements for the type of jobs you’re applying for.
You may surprise yourself with how much experience you have. Plus, there’s no need for any white lies that might trip you up further down the recruitment process.
Tailor your CV
One CV does not fit all job applications. Adapt yours for each and every role to make sure it answers the job description. A tailored curricular vitae will stand out to a potential employer and show them you are serious about their opportunity. It’s a sure-fire way to get through the first round of recruitment.
You may hear stories about ostentatious CVs winning ballsy job applicants their dream role, but what really matters is that you present your information in a way that is easy to read.
Forget busy fonts and stick with short paragraphs with clear subheadings to get your message across.
Keep it to the point
Remember that the person reviewing your CV may have dozens, if not hundreds, to go through so keep yours short. Edit your CV to no more than two sides of A4 with the most compelling detail about your suitability for the post on page one.
